The National Police are responsible for day-to-day policing within Shenewa, as well as the protection and security of government buildings and elected government officials. They also contain within their remit the policing of Shenewan territorial waters and the upkeep of prisons.

The Imperial Gendarmerie are a paramilitary organisation in Shenewa responsible for law enforcement. They are most visible in their roles as riot police and police tactical units. However, the gendarmerie are also responsible for protection of appointed ministers. To minimise possibility of duress being placed on elected ministers through their protection staff, the security of elected ministers is provided by the National Police.

Whilst it is often discussed as if it were a separate organisation, the Directory for Special Investigations also falls under the remit of the Imperial Gendarmerie.

The Special Missions Unit (Keumoine: Wēnge Nāhene Notuheke) fall under the command of the Gendarmerie. They are a special forces unit primarily tasked with training for hostage rescue.

Duties

Policing

  • Maintaining law and order in public gatherings and demonstrations, including crowd control and other security activities.
  • Domestic counter-terrorism investigations and operations, including hostage rescue.
  • Operations and investigations against organised and especially drug related crime.
  • Protection of members of the Imperial family, Imperial government departments and visiting heads of state.
  • Upholding the constitution against those who may wish to alter it through illegitimate means.

Military

  • In the event of war, fall under military command to ensure rear-lines security.
  • Defence of vital infrastructure.
  • Law and order in enemy territory occupied by the Imperial Armed Forces.

History

Between 1951 and 1967, like the Imperial Army, the Gendarmerie staffed itself primarily with conscripts, drafting 70,000 each year, with each draftee serving two years.

The Directory for Special Investigations employs 27,000 personnel. It is Shenewa's domestic intelligence, counter-intelligence and security service. Being part of the gendarmerie, it is answerable to the Emperor rather than to the elected Prime Minister. Partially because of this and alleged DSI operations against political opponents of the Imperial family, it has sometimes been accused of functioning as a secret police force.

The Joint Border Police Force carries out the border control and border security functions in Shenewa. Typically the police personnel within the JBPF take are responsible for border control at air, sea and rail crossings into Shenewa, as well as customs. Meanwhile the Gendarmerie are responsible for defending, guarding and patrolling the land borders of Shenewa. The post as head of JBPF rotates every 5 years between the police and gendarmerie. The head of the JBPF has two direct subordinates, one from the National Police and the other from the Gendarmerie.
