The Confederate States of Northern Avalonian, otherwise know as K.N.A, is a confederation of ten nations made from former colonies formed in 1933, it came into existence as for as a compromise between separatists and untist factions in the nations of Liao and Schangau after the GC. Since then the Confederacy has become a much more politically and socially unified entity, with the KNAfication movement which was highly popular during the 70s and 80s. Today K.N.A is economically rich and Diverse nation with many of its constiutants having highly specialized economies

History

Native settlement

Settled around 10000 BC by early humans.

Kingdoms

by 700 AC a number of small tribal kingdoms had popped up in what is now Liao, composed of many different cultural groups they were competitive and small wars would break out often, they lived in a type of walled hill city known as a kurik.

Expeditions of Ioseb Balavadze, Felix Montilla and early colonial period. 1695-1720

The first Artemia explorer to discover what would later become C.S.N.A was the SSE explorer Ioseb Balavadze (1667-1699) who mapped the area in 1695. Claiming the area between the Fui Tsi river to the north and the Onate river in the south, he declared the Territory of New Somkartveila although left no permanent presence and continued his expedition northward. In 1697 Felix Montilla of the AYG arrived and mapped the area between the Fui Tsi river and the Karol river, which marks the modern day southern and northern most borders of C.S.N.A. He claimed the whole area for AYG as the Territory of Cassonia (named after his sponsor, Prince Casso of Tolodora) and leaving a garrison at the mouth of the Ornate. In 1698 a fleet of Agran colony ships arrived to create the first settlement of Calcazza.

The territorial disputes between the SSE and AYG began to heat up with the exploitation of a rich pelt and stone trade between the local tribes and AYG. This accelerated into a colonial arms race between the two to claim the territory. This stalemate was eventually settled by the Distant purchases of 1715 which both powers agreed to sell most of the Cassonian territory, although AYG would keep Celayeta and the SSE would keep Iere. The North and Fujian islands were sold to Beifang which became the Territory of Liao, the north eastern coast was sold to the King of Seratof and became the Jata colony and the South sold to Ringerike which became the Sorland territory.

The early colonial economies were reliant on trade with natives as the main economic driver as agriculture yeilded little in the harsh climate, although the bakanese were able to enjoy early successes in rice cultivation and so grew rapidly in comparison to the other colonies. Riverside territory became hotly contested between settlers and natives leading to a number of initial conflicts. Unable to mount sufficient numbers to advance against the natives, The colonies began to build alliances between certain tribes by exchanging muskets and modern goods for protection, Slaves, pelts, gold and precious stones. This was the beginning of the Shakan and marked the start of a rapid decline of Native population due to Shakan slavery raids and loss of important coastal food production. The Shakan also took on many cultural, political, military and social aspects of thier colonial allies.

The Settlement period: Gun Wars and Liaotian expansion. 1720-1823

Initially each colony were small barely settled outposts devoid of economy but but the turn of the century each was in a unique situation with clear winners and losers.

Liao expanded rapidly during the settlement period, by 1823 it controled most of the interior north of the Xin river through Shakan proxy or direct control and had a population double that of rest of Cassonia. The advantages of settlers used to the climate and the success of rice cultivation as a staple lead to stable growth that continued throughout the first century. The Fujian islands also proved to be rich grounds for various cash crops such as sugar, tabacco and cotton which were quite profitable using slave labour. This allowed Liao to maintain a comparable modern fleet and army. Liao remained industrially backwards due to a over reliance of agriculture and the lack of any coal sources in the colony.

Sorland was the smallest of the colonies by population by 1823 with it's economy largely made up of cattle herding, fishing and gold mining. Agriculture proved to be extremely difficult and most towns hugged the larger rivers to farm vegetables in the watersheds. The colony gained a large boost with the arrival of the Austrasiens in 1763, who would go to settle the southern slopes of Gangsleer Hugel. The Sorlanders had continual trouble maintaining power over its various Shakan allies and had to put down multiple revolts.

Jata started as a failure with the colonies first city being abandoned in 1823. It's second attempt was a success as new axzara became the capital. Jata grew as a penal colony with a small seratofian elite rulling over a disperate group from all over the empire. It proved difficult for the seratofians to control the Vast floodplains of the Xin river delta with groups of escaped convicts forming towns deep within. These were known as Yulo and by the early 1800s had grown large enough to menace the seratofian colony with raids. The Yulo towns were either stilted or sat on pieces of high ground with earthworks and were independent of each other largely formed into seperate ethnic communities.

Celayeta was the richest colony thanks to significant mineral resources and it's important position as a hub for Agran colonial efforts further south. Its main port at Acero city was an important stop over for Agran traders, while also being one of the largest industrial sites in North avalonia with large dockyards and iron mills. It's efforts of inward expansion had been limited due to a strong Native resistance against brutal Agranian colonial rule and a large slave revolt in 1812. Celayeta was also a important resettlement location for Protestant northern Agrans who had been evicted under the harsh religious persecutions, By 1823 they made up 19% of all Agrans in the colony.

Originally the Shakan slavery system had brought the tribes allied to the coloniaps power and wealth but by the 1770s the native populations had fallen to critical levels and no independent tribes were left. As there own agricultural land was increasing taken over by settlers this forced the Shakan into a series of bloody conflicts with rivals for slaves and farmland known as the Gun Wars (1775-1821). The largest of these was the War of 1788 between the Bakanese allied Ashern vs the Agran allied Vukan over the southern foothills of the Xin river valley. Both sides had arimes In a battle that was resembled pike and shot artermian warfare the Vukan were decisively crushed, dealing a fatal blow to Agran colonial ambitions in central Cassonia.

In 1821 the Ju Bao massacre was commited by the Liaotian allied Mao tribes over a dispute with bakanese settlers after the death of a Maoni child caught stealing from a liaotian farm. The Mao then massacred all 500 residents of the settlement and burned it to the ground, in response the Liaotian army decimated the tribe. This, combined with what was seen as increasingly unfair treaties with the colonials led to the beginning of a secret alliance between all the Shakan under the western educated Ren Som of the Tau lon.

The War of the Blue Wheel (1823-1827)

On February 11th 1823, the representatives of 17 Shakan tribes met at the conjunction of Xin and Orla Rivers. 3000 warriors made oathes to Rem Som of the Tau Ion. This creates the Alliance of the Blue Wheel with it's goal being the destruction of the colonies.

1923

On the summer solstice July 21 the Great Revolt began as Blue wheel all over Cassonia marched against Colonial garrisons, overwhelming and wiping them out. The Blue wheel were able to take control of the Xin river valley and force the Liaotians north into defensive positions behind the Zhao River. 10,000 Blue Wheel marched against Celayeta sieging the city of Riaza while a raid against Acero port and fired the AYG fleet there. A number of Jatan towns south of lishao fought tenaciously to hold out against Blue wheel attacks.

The colonials launched a series of uncoordinated offensives, which failed against tough resistance. In particular the Colonial forces found it difficult to overcome the Earthwork Kuriks which artillery had a limited effect on.

1924

In January, the 4 representatives of the Colonial powers met at the Celayetan Port of Kythern to announce the Coalition of Avalonia. Under this coalition command would be split into a Northern front between the Liao and Jata under the supreme command of Prince Bai Kei Tsui, and a southern front of Sorland and Celayeta under command of general Victor Hebanez. The coalition started the campaign badly with a Agran attempt to encircle the Blue wheel position on the Ornate being checked at the Battle of Andalusia (March 11) saw a total Agran defeat as the Blue wheel Force surrounded by Ren Som skillfully ambushed them at a river crossing.

A Bakanese offensive against the north was defeated in open Battle at Bei Due where Rem Some again smashed the coalition force. The coalition decided to wait for more reinforcements from the continent

Baka-Seratof war (1830-1831)

While the Conference of Kimberly (1825) had settled all the borders between the major powers of Cassonia and created the Tsing Tsi territory as an area of shared influence, Seratof had been unable to destroy the Yulo and with it's strength sapped by the war, these independent groups had begun to expand their influence. The Yulo also began to trade with the other powers of the region which created only increased there power and soon a series of Yulo republics and kingdoms began to sprout in nominally Seratofian territory. In 1830 a new Jatan Governer was appointed with the goal of destroying the Yulo with military force. His first strike would be at Fort Taggora, which had been built originally by the Seratofians to guard the Entrance to the Xin River but had been taken by the Yulo during the War of the Blue Wheel as it's garrison had been weakened to fight on the Mainland. Its Key position at the mouth of the Xin River allowed the Yulo to control trade comming from the interior, retaking it would cut a valuable source of Yulo income and open up the interior of re-conquest. The Jatan Governer decided that an suprise amphibious assault with Naval support was the optimal plan, The attack was launched on February 26th and was a total victory for the Jatan Forces.

However, inside the port at the time had been the Liaotian trade junk Bao Zhu which had been destroyed in the fighting and a number of its crew killed or captured. Local Bakanese authorities had been outraged, demanding the release of prisoners and that Seratof pay damages. The Jatan Governer wanted to use them as an example to other powers in the region not to get involved with the Yulo, so had them tried as pirates illegally operating in Seratofian territory and executed. Relations between Liao and Jata rapidly deteriated as both sides began to mobilize for War. The Liaotians building new supply routes and calling up their Shakan allies. Jatan Forces strengthened the border forts and called for SSE reinforcements, however political struggles in the heart of the empire would stop this from arriving.

In the Samot-Seratofian Empire a period of period of political instability had set in as the king of Seratof had been attempting to gain more autonomy for Seratof within the Empire, for this reason Jata was important as it allowed the Seratofian king's to justify there involvment in foreign affairs and trade. The Fort Taggora incident was the perfect justification for the Emperor to wash his hands of the Whole affair. While openly condemning the Bakanese invasion, he secretly allowed it and communicated to the bakanese that he would not intervene. The Seratofians were on their own.

By June Liao had mobilized around 15,000 Liaotian troops plus 5,000 of its Shakan allies, while Jata had 10,000 of its own troops fortified along the 50 Km stretch of the Zhao River which marked the Baka-Jata Border. Liao had spent the start of the year building new overland supply routes while Jata updated it's fortifications. Jata expected a large and immediate offensive and had called upon the Seratofian fleet to reinforce it's position, but that was still many months away.

April 22nd saw the beginning of the war with an official declaration of war from the Bakanese Empire on the Kingdom of Seratof beginning the Baka-Seratof War. The first fighting of the war started with a suprise attack by Yulo-Liatian forces emerged from the Xin delta to overwhelm the undermanned southern forts. the Yulo-Liaotian force took Kär in 4 weeks before marching on the capital of New Axzara in August only to be defeated by a much smaller Jatan force at the Battle of Johans Ridge sent the Yulo-Liaotian force into a rout, the Jatans were unable to capitalise on this as the Northern Liaotian army, now numbering over 40,000 broke through the Zhao River forts with a massive assault. The Jatans decided to retreat within the fortress capital of New Axzara and wait for reinforcements from Seratof.

The naval campaign proved to be the decisive front of the war. At the start the Liaotians had a clear advantage of local fleet power and quickly blockaded the Jatan fleet within port. This gave the Liaotians improved logistics and manoeuvrability which they used to divide the smaller Jatan army into fighting on multiple fronts. Raiding was also common and by august all of the seratofian islands in the sea of Liao had been taken.

The decisive battle of the war came in October with the arrival of the Seratofian fleet with 10,000 elite reinforcements, with these the power balance on the seas would turn to the seratofians and the landed reinforcements could break out of New Axzara. The Liaotians launched a series of massive attacks attempting to take the city before the reinforcements arrived, but the Jatans repulsed these attacks with heavy casualties on both sides. Unable to take New Axzara the Liaotians prepared to face the Jatans in a decisive Naval battle.

The Liaotian fleet was larger, but the seratofians ships were on average larger and more modern. Admiral San Wei was in charge of the Liaotian fleet and on October 25th met them just west of the city of Kär. The Seratofian Fleet was skirting the coast as it dashed towards New Axzara, with the wind blowing toward the coast San Wei ordered a charge against the seratofians battle line. The Seratofian fire was murderous but soon the battle was joined as the Liaotian borders swarmed over the seratofian decks. The seratofians were weakened by months at sea and supprised by the Liaotians ferocity, yet fighting still raged for hours. It was only a suicidal ramming charge by the Liaotian capital ship "Hue" against the Seratofian capital ship "Salla" which broke her back, which finally too broke Seratofian spirit and they surrendered.

The surrender of the fleet proved to be the final hope for Jatan forces, who held out until January 1831 before an internal coup by Prince Braun and the cities surrender. The war continued on paper until June before the Axzara peace deal which gave beifang all Seratofian territory in Cassonia in exchange for a certain amount.

Baka-Goetic war (1850)

A dispute over the sovereignty of the Bakanese western territories between Bakfong and the Goetic empire led to war in 1850. The small, modern Goetic fleet smashed the large imperial fleet at the battle of Matic bay, with Bakfong quickly surrendering after that.

In the treaty of Alva Bakfong surrendered part of the colony of Liao as part of deal, this led to a period of almost hostile relations between Liaotian governer and the imperial court as the governer threatened to revolt against the empire unless this part of the treaty was reversed. Eventually this issue was placated with the proclamation of home government of the colony of Liao which effectively made it a sovereign state under the bakanese empire. In 1851 the Goetic frigate Konig arrived with a Goetic deligation to officially accept the surrender of the territory of shaggao and proclaimed the Goetic imperial colony of Schangau.

Goetic wars of Expansion 1865-1866

A border dispute between AYG and the Goetic empire led to war in 1865. The news came first to the colony of Celayeta, but the timid governer Gomez Hartedo remained on the defensive martialing forces for a campaign next year. This allowed for the Goetics to make the first move, attacking the large Celayetan

Gulkysten war (1873-1874)

Sorland and Liao go to war over the gold rich gulkysten river system, after a pitched campainge, the Liaotian army is defeated decisively at 3 battle of kixi. Sorland is able to expand northward.

Baka-teuton friendship treaty

Goetia hands over some land in Schangau exchange for an alliance with beifang, Liao and schangau become close allies

Liaotian Independance (1900)

in 1900 Liao was granted independence from beifang.

GC (1915-1925)

Liao and schangau fought together against Crown coalition and Republicans in the Avaonian theatre.

Post War troubles and confedracy (1925-1933)

ethnic tensions in Liao and Schangaus are compounded by a bad economy, 2 major factions emerge in both nations. the Unitists believe they must unite the nations to become stronger together, while separatist want to dissolve the nations into small Individual states, violence erupts between both groups until vote of agreement on confederacy in 1933.

The Build Times(1933-1950)

After confederation was a period of neutrality as K.N.A began a period of internal peace and slow integration. It also began to build some larger infrastructure, but these programs were limited with state cooperation being quite limited.

in 1975 a popular republican revolution rose up in the Ringerike colony of Sorland, after a few days of freedom it was brutally crushed by the rmed forces which remaind loayl to the home government, K.N.A declared that the colonial government was illegitimate and invaded, overpowering the much smaller and lighter defence force it was able to secure the mainland quickly. However it suffered much heavier losses against the RRN and was unable to take prince albert island.

Sorland joins KNA(1979)

after becoming independent its economy was in a poor state due to war damage so after a few years it joined KNA.

Watomori(1993)

in 1993 a change in laws around langue school funding spirals into protest in the Aki dominated regions of south east Gexie for recognition as its own nation, the republic of watomori officaly becomes part of K.N.A in the same year.

Balinese hostage crisis (2002)

a prominent Gexie business man and his family are taken hostage while on holiday in BM, K.N.A begins a campaign to rescue its citizens and assit the BM government in destroying radical groups

Shakan

The United tribes of Shakan is the heavy industrial heartland of K.N.A containing the Tagoon industrial valley, where the production of stainless steel, aluminium and titanium are important industries. during confederacy Shakan was the poorest and most agricultural of all the nations but with the construction of the Braßen hydroelectric dam in the 1950s its rapidly industrialised during the 60s and 70s. Its culture is that of a mixed colonial and Native. The Republic uses a electoral college with 18 states.

Bakayeta

The Federation of Bakayeta is a Triumvirate Constitutional Monarchy with its heads of state being Prince Józef Powzy of Kraust, King Suleiman Avižo of Constanta, and Prince Veltan of Neu Arrykro. Bakayeta has a diverse economy with service sectors being especially prominent. Its famous for its clone towns, as many use designs from there former homelands.

Fujian Islands

The Republic of fujian is the centre of K.N.A,s tourism industry, with its much more mountainous terrain and average cooler temperatures, it is a favourite for local tourism.

Schangau

The Principality of Schangau is the finance, Trade, and technology capital of K.N.A. The Bessermernmunde/Shaggao port complex is on of Anterra largest and the 2 cities headquarter 35% of K.N.A,s businesses. It is a centre for high technology companies which specialise in software development, cybersecurity, and precision instrument manufacture. Schangau is a Twin Agranan/Goetic monarchy with an official aristocratic caste system.

Gexie

The Commonwealth of Gexie is the largest nation in K.N.A, containing a third of the confederacy's population. Its economy is built around a largely automotive and electronic manufacture, as well as a spread of healthy minor industries including mining, agriculture, real-estate and various service industries.Gexie is home to the Jingzhoa combined manufacture plant which is one of the worlds largest industrial complexes with over 50,000 employees.

Santa Radox

The kingdom of Santa Radox is an important industrial region in K.N.A being home to the Sorain shipyards, Kythen industries and Acero city. It also is the contributes heavily to the armed forces with the CAF research and testing facility, Aria training grounds and numerous other depots.

Sorland

The Republic of Sorland is the agricultural heartland accounts for 70% of K.N.A,s agricultural productions, which is mostly soybeans with other assorted foodstuffs coming from Greenhouses. It also has a respectable bio engineering, chemical industry and insurance.

Watomori

The republic of Watomori has a developed retail and tourism industries being a popular destination for avalonians wishing to experience Bakanese and Aki culture for a lesser cost. The festival of white harvest is one of the most popular local events in K.N.A attracting roughly 500,000 visitors each year.

Xinji

The republic of Xinji is most rural of the K.N.A nations, being an important logistical hub for trade between the states. It is has a large cattle ranching industry and a minor oil industry. it is among the most multicultural of the K.N.A nations with no clear ethnic majority.

Neu Austrasein

The republic of Neu Austrasein has a varied economy with mining, manufacture, chemicals and agriculture. Neu Austrasien hosts the confederal capital of Rosenheim

Economy

The economies in K.N.A are highly developed free market economies which are encompass a large variety of industries, but have become increasingly interconnected. Much of the economies is based around the development and use of high technology products and services, with K.N.A firms often being at the forefront in there respective fields. Many states also have respectable tourism and retail sectors. K.N.A became agriculturally self sufficient in 2012 using advances in GMO and Greenhouse technology.

Agriculture

Since the 1970s K.N.A,s largest food export has been Cattle and Soybeans. Gexie and Watomori have had a long history of cotton farming however those industries have become less important overtime. K.N.A climate is unable to support large scale staple food growth so it import's large amounts of food

Tourism is an important economic sector for Fujian, Wotomori and Bakayeta. with many tourists travelling to these nations to experience a wide range of cultures in a fairly compact trip.

Film

K.N.A has been a centre of film since the early 20s with its diverse set of architecture making it a popular destinantios for filmmakers.

Precision and automotive manufacture are among the most important industries in K.N.A, With Gexie, Schangau and Santa Radox having large sectors. Many conpanies are considered leaders in there respective fields.

K.N.A is a Confederal Presidential Diarchy. at the Confederal level it has the semi elected Confederal council which is made up of 20 seats and runs on a majority vote system. The Council is limited to passing laws on foreign relations, military, interconnecting infrastructure and health, all national governments must send laws they have created to the council which can delay them from being processed for 6 mouths, it also can summon emergency powers if all council member are in agreement. national governments control there own local militias, law enforcement, local infrastructure, public services, economics, and taxation.

With the confederal government handling some things like military, foreign policy and some infrastructure that concerns interconnection between the states The confederal government is a democratic diarchy with 1 president being elected from the north and the other from the south It 2 houses The Confederal council which is a semi elected group of 2 representatives from each nation One being popular vote The other being chosen as royalty, business related, or a religious figure depending on the state They can make changes to laws and policy in the area of the confederal governments jurisdiction without needing it to pass the senate They have effectively all the power in foreign policy The senate is 2 representatives from each state in each nation Half are elected by popular vote The other half are either nobility, business interest group's, religious figures, politically influential families, or randomly chosen. The senate and the council together in agreement can make changes to the confederal constitution which is around the rules of the nations sovereignty and common laws This has only happened once It can also lobby to cancel laws made by the council The senate is run on a system that each nation gets a single vote And so the states vote with there nations and the majority will win one vote But you need unanimous 10 nation votes to enact it Beyond that each nation is totally free to be politically whatever they like as along as it doesn't break the common laws

Military

The Confederal armed forces is the unified military organization comprising the Confederal Army, Air Force and Navy. The presidential diarchy is the commander-in-chief of the military, and formulates policy through the Minister of Defence. since the 1970s and after several major reequipment programs, the Armed Forces have become one of the most technologically advanced and professional armed forces in Northern Avalonia. The Confederal Armed forces is largely suppllied by local Sorces including Helmsjager ind, shanxxi defence solutions, and Santa Magnesia Inc.

Culture

A deep respect and admiration for cultural traditions is ingrained in soceity, with many people choosing to wear traditional style dress in public or at work, and visit religous sites. there is a deep tolerance of other cultures and religions within K.N.A although this may not extend to foreign groups as elitist views are common.
